DePuy Hip Recall Recipients To Undergo Certain Medical Tests

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Plaintiffs numbering in the hundreds have filed DePuy lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, DePuy Orthopaedics, as more issues in health are surfacing. Health conditions will be determined as soon as hip recall victims check with their orthopedist. To determine the brand of your hip replacement device, you could consult with your orthopedist or even the hospital where the surgery took place. One in every eight patients needs to go through a corrective or revision surgery improve the welbeing of the patient. However, the undesired effects the devices have imposed vary among each recipient. Certain more tests may be needed to make you aware of your current health status.

In some instances, you would need to take medical procedures as your doctor sees fit. DePuy have posted in their website that recall victims should, “…return to the surgeon’s office for a follow up visit including clinical assessment and radiographic evaluation…blood testing for cobalt and chromium ion levels…and/or a MARS MRI or ultrasound if necessary.” Studies have shown that particles from the ASR devices flake off and cause the recipient to have high concentrations of cobalt and chromium in their bloodstream as well as neighboring tisues and muscles causing pain and much worse.

The following medical testing procedure might be necessary:

Blood Test. Initially, a blood work is needed to determine the levels of cobalt and chromium in your body. If it is discovered that you have concentrations greater than 7 parts per billion, you would need to have a second bout of blood test in three months.

MARS MRI and/or ultrasound. If your second blood tests reveal results that are still greater than 7 parts per billion, a MARS MRI and/or an ultrasound might be necessary.

Revision surgery. One would need to undergo a revision surgery if rediological tests reveal evidence of tissue damage and accumulated fluid.

Annual testing. In instances where cobalt and chromium levels are less than 7 parts per billion, patients might still find themselves in need to be evaluated every year as per their doctor’s instructions.

Each recipient’s case vary. While some may experience agonizing pain, others may not feel anything at all. Despite not experiencing any pain, you might be surprised to know that you can still be affected by the risks from the defective ASRs. Seeking your orthopedist’s expertise regarding your health status is a good idea from here on forward.

It would be but normal to be concerned about your health after the DePuy recall. Nevertheless, it is equally important for you to have DePuy make up for their neglect in the manufacture of their hip products. When you file a lawsuit against DePuy today, you gain greater chances of claiming damages for your losses.
